The Foundation

The foundation is the major support for the structure of your home. It can help to keep water from seeping into your basement. However, over time, the structure of your home begins to settle, and cracks form in the foundation. Keeping water out of your basement becomes a challenge.

Keeping the basement waterproofed and dry requires some care. It is not unusual for the foundation for a house to experience basement wetness at some point in time. You can take steps to prevent moisture and water problems from developing, or getting from getting worse.

There are two types of water problems that homeowners experience.

Surface water

Surface water can be described as water from heavy rainfall, rapid snowmelt, sprinklers, garden hoses, etc. If surface water is being properly diverted away from your foundation, and you still have basement wetness, ground water may be the problem.

Ground water

If water seeps through the floor, at the joints between the floor and basement wall, or at a lower point of the wall itself, it is usually due to the presence of ground water.

This may be caused by seasonal high water tables or underground springs and seeps. If your home is in the flood plain of a nearby stream or creek, it may be affected. If ground water is not properly channeled or eliminated, Hydrostatic Pressure can literally force water into your basement through the cracks in the floor and foundation walls. This problem needs to be corrected in order to prevent these cracks or openings from enlarging.
